Youth Mental Health First Aid

Learn a more in-depth understanding of young people’s mental health and how you can make a difference.

The course will teach you the skills and confidence to spot the signs of mental health issues in a young person, offer first aid and guide them towards the support they need.

You will learn how to maximise early intervention to improve the chance for successful outcomes. The course will teach you to listen, reassure and respond, even in a crisis and even potentially stop a crisis from happening. 

The course aims to give you the information and skills to look after your own mental health so that you can set an example for young people.

Course content

This two-day training course trains you as a Youth Mental Health First Aider (MHFAider®)
and will equip you with:

An in-depth understanding of young people’s mental health and factors that affect wellbeing

Practical skills to spot the triggers and signs of mental health issues

Confidence to reassure and support a young person in distress

Enhanced interpersonal skills such as non-judgemental listening

Knowledge to help a young person recover their health by guiding them to further support – whether that’s through self-help sites, their place of learning, the NHS, or a mix – engaging with parents, carers and external agencies where appropriate

Ability to support a young person with a long-term mental health issue or disability to thrive

Our mental health experts

Steph and Laura currently deliver our Youth Mental Health First Aid training programme. They are an integral part of the Locala 0-19 Team and are dedicated to help improve the mental health of young people.

Steph is a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse in School Nursing, and Laura is a Child Development Practitioner. Between them they have several years of experience working with young people within the community and schools, to assess and support them with their mental health needs.

Both Steph and Laura have a keen interest in promoting positive mental health and wellbeing in young people and are passionate in delivering the Youth Mental Health First Aid course.
